Consumer Price Index (CPI)

Monthly US CPI readings and the long-term price trend.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is the Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly measure of the average price level for a basket of goods and services bought by US households — food, energy, shelter, medical care, and more. "Core CPI" strips out volatile food and energy prices to show the underlying inflation trend the Fed watches most closely. This page tracks the monthly index level and its trend over time, distinct from the year-over-year inflation rate derived from it.
